2nd California Cavalry Company F

Company "F" of the 2nd California Cavalry, recreates and honors the original Company raised in the Sacramento area and known as "The Sacramento Rangers". We are registered with the U.S. Cavalry Association's Reenactors Registry as an established cavalry reenactment unit. The original Company, after training at Camp Alert in San Francisco, which was located on the ground now enclosed by Mission, Folsom, Twenty-forth, and Twenty-sixth Streets, then known as the Pioneer Race Track, was sent to Camp Union, Sacramento in

the area where the Sacramento Zoo is now located. Their duties included protection of immigrants settling in California, protection of overland shipments of gold coming out of California and heading East to support the War effort, protection of communication lines, etc. Their stations included Camp Union, Camp Bidwell in Butte County, Fort Crook in Shasta County, Ione Valley, Goose Lake and others with expeditions into Nevada and Central California, before mustering out in March, 1866.

All horse equipments, tack, uniforms and arms are of the Civil War period, usually reproduction, and their training is from the 1861 Cavalry Tactics Manual by Brig. Gen. Phillip St. George Cooke, 2nd U.S. Cavalry.

The new Company "F" is available to perform authentic cavalry maneuvers and drill including "Running At The Heads", a saber and pistol exercise, for horse shows, rodeos, or other events. They schedule rides and overnight expeditions in uniform including visiting actual stations of the original Company. The Company is a member of the Butte County Historical Society, in the heart of the historical area of the original Company, and the US Cavalry Association at Ft. Riley, Kansas.
